HILLSBORO, TEXAS— The Hill College Continuing Education Department will be offering Pharmacy Technician courses at the Johnson County Campus starting in February.

The instructor for the pharmacy technician program, Sarah Youngblood, CPhT, comes with experience from various local pharmacies. Youngblood was a single mother of one little boy with a daughter on the way while working at Subway when she realized it wasn’t going to be enough to provide for her two children. She enrolled in a year-long Pharmacy Technician program. Upon graduation, she was offered a position at Brookshire’s Pharmacy in Whitney. She stayed at Brookshire’s Pharmacy for five years before moving to Eubank Drug in Whitney, where she has been for the past eight years. While at Eubank Drug, the opportunity presented itself for Youngblood to teach. This year’s courses offered will make her eighth class to teach here at Hill College. For Youngblood, being a pharmacy technician is just enough of the medical field she needs and gives her the satisfaction of helping others, as well. Youngblood is enthusiastic about getting as much hands-on to real-world applications as she possibly can for her students. She instructs with some compounding, numerous visual references, and an assortment of videos to get her lessons thoroughly understood by her students.

The Pharmacy Tech classes will be held Feb. 17-July. 24 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00-10:00 p.m. in Room 209 of the Instruction building. This hybrid for lecture program will prepare individuals for jobs in retail and institutional settings at an entry-level. Students who earn their certificate will learn to perform pharmacy calculations, comply with federal and state-level laws and regulations, prepare prescription orders with a licensed pharmacist’s supervision. This course will prepare students to sit for the certification exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board to obtain a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). This course is a hybrid for lecture with face-to-face contact and also some online content. Collectively, the courses consist of 208 face-to-face and online hours, accompanied by a 150-hour internship in a pharmacy setting upon completion of lecture.
